What was going on with this egg?

I had some egg that the shells cracked on, so I’ve been giving them to my barn cats. I just broke one and it’s got something going on with it? These eggs have been refrigerated since I collected them, I do this daily.

im very curious as to what this egg was doing. I know some of these eggs were fertilized, but this doesn’t look like any other eggs that have had sperm floating around that haven’t met the yolk. But that’s my only guess as to what this is?

It looks totally normal to me. If you are asking about the white stringy bit it’s the chlaza, which is sometimes more obvious than others but it stabilizes/holds the yolk in place in the middle of the egg. When you crack the egg open and remove the shell you sever the bond. I attached a link to a diagram.

Okay, thank you! I’ve never seen one so prominent before, so I was really curious as to what it was.

That string you see, which you assumed to be sperm, is actually a chalaza. There are two Chalazae and they help anchor the yolk inside the egg. In some cases they are less obvious, so when you finally notice it you might be a bit surprised.

X2!!!
