What won't chickens eat?

I'm getting a few new chickens this year, and was wondering what can I have in the backyard that the chickens won't tear up (my mom was displeased that none of her plants survived last year).

You have to make a choice. one or the other. Some breeds like bantam Cochin don't make as big a mess because of feathered feet. my grandmother keeps silkies in her garden

Pretty much this.

Even if you have plants they won't eat, they'll still scratch up all the dirt, damaging roots and knocking plants over. Easiest thing to do is give chickens their own space and just expect it to be a barren wasteland. You can also make a tractor to move them around on the grass and keep them out of landscaping.
