So I want to get into breeding and I currently have a black frizzle Cochin cockerel, if I wanted to breed mottled babies would I need to get a white hen or how would that work? Is there another thread on here that goes into further detail on this topic?

A mottled bird is a black bird with two mottled genes.
Without breeding two mottled birds together you won't produce any mottled chicks.
If you had one mottled bird you could breed it to a non mottled and all the chicks would carry one mottled gene so they wouldn't express it. Breeding those chicks together or back to the mottled parent would then produce some mottled chicks.
