What would you do? Selling birds exposed to disease...

KATY you keep saying that I am selling.
I have never sold one egg on the internet. And when I do, I will have had INDIANA HENS from BYC come by and test my flock. Then I will be NPIP certified. I am sorry that I can't sell to you. You seem to keep talking about it. On this post and others. Trust me when I can sell, I will let you know. Then you can remind yourself to NOT buy from me.

NPIP testing does not require testing for a lot of diseases. It depends on the state what they test for.

I never said you're selling....I said if you ever do you need to make your customers aware of what they're buying. I just think you're fooling yourself if you think that way of dealing with an illness in your flock is going to get you very far. Yes, the bird may have survived, but that doesn't mean they're healthy....even if they look like they are.

I won't need a reminder....I'll remember.

Actually, keeping carrier birds is exactly the way to weaken your flock, not strengthen it. Folks who know what they're doing, the old timers who want to build natural resistance and strong immune systems, cull all sick birds and only keep those who never show symptoms, not the ones who become ill and recover.

We don't want to veer too far off the original poster's questions, though, so let's try to get back on the road here.

I just bought a cockerel from a fellow Hoosier Poultry tester and acquaintance to Doug Akers. I told this guy " Josh ", that I would meet him infront of his driveway to assure NO BIO CONTAMINATION to his birds. And we both know that I am bringing back the risk. This Buff Roo is doing well and is healthy. But, you never know what he has in him.
I assume that is a risk that anyone who buys chickens takes. And I am NEVER going to mislead anyone, like the way CityChicker was. I do not sell my birds or eggs. ALL my birds are hatched here and stay here till I choose who makes the cut. My point is only to make it obvious that no matter how clean you think you are, and how sterile you keep your birds environment, your just putting off the inevitable. Your birds will get sick. And IF they do, are you going to kill it? I am not. I am giving my birds a chance to fight to survive.
A 100 years ago, there was no Tractor Supply Co. to buy your meds for your birds. They either lived or died. I am just raising chickens the same way people did a 100 years ago. The Buff Roo came from a closed flock of a Southern Indiana guy's grandma. They had this line for 35 years, and did not sell too much either. Must be doing something right. Consider my flock a closed flock for me. Not to be sold off till I croak. So ,no worries. I will keep posting pics, on my BYC page, as my flocks developes. And you can be the judge.
Hope all of you and your birds are enjoying this nice day.

Again, let's stay on track here. There are two philosophies on illness in a flock. You asked if when my birds get sick will I kill it? The answer for me is yes, I will, but that is not the question the OP asked.
Yes, I want to be notified if someoen has had illness in their flock; no, not something like bumblefoot or avian pox, which are not carrier diseases, but any respiratory crud, I'd want to know about. Would I buy the birds then? No. And especially if they cannot tell me what the birds had, which seems to be very common. Few want to really know what the bird has, they just want it to quit having that snotty nose or to quit smelling so bad, etc. Then if it recovers, they just sort of try to forget anything ever happened and merrily go on selling eggs, chicks, birds, etc. That should not happen if you treat others the way you want to be treated. And no one should be insulted if the question is asked of them, "Have your birds ever had any respiratory illness?".

I never disagreed with wanting to know what the bird has. ESPECIALLY IF I was a moderator of this site and the person who is selling known proven carriers of disease. I believe it is your job to police these sellers and hold them to a standard too. Let people know on a bulletin board of troubles with sellers. A FEEDBACK SYSTEM like was mentioned earlier. Heck yeah go get em!!

Yes, we have a feedback system here and I suggest that everyone make use of it. It is under the Hatching Eggs section in BST in red. We cannot possibly police every transaction that goes bad with 27000+ members, though, if a person has a pattern of scamming or selling ill birds, we may ban them from BST, as has happened recently.

Right on Cynthia, great advice for those who buy from sellers here. I understand that there must be dozens of auctions every hour, and " BUYER BEWARE"

I am very grateful that you guys do this. Don't see how you could do more.

I have not always reported posts that belonged in BST but were posted elsewhere; did not want to be a bother. Won't make this mistake again.

Personally, I think if you have solid evidence of some one selling sick birds you should either come right out and say who it is or pm one of the mods with the proof you have. I'm not sure what benefit posting criptically provides. As it is some one here could still purchase these birds and have the unfortunate consequences to deal with . This post hasn't done anything to dissuade that from happening.

Yeah, Tracy the next thing you know these birds wind up in the hands of an unknowing, legit breeder, who really thinks their birds are clean and disease free. Then that person sells to someone here who sells with regularity and before you know it, EVERYONE here has this crud.
Yeah IF you buy sick birds, you need to not just get a refund, but post and keep an eye out for this character selling again.
