My fantail cock was squatting down almost flat with the top of the nestbox and was making an gooooh, gooooh, gooooh sound I never heard him make before and his hen was standing up beside him. Is he trying to comfort her and get her to lay or what?

The cock will decide on the nest spot then he'll do as you described, if the hen excepts the spot she will start the nest, soon you will have eggs.

You can expect eggs about 10 after seeing them copulate and the eggs should hatch 19+- days after being laid.

Mine usually do to. I find ambient temperature can play a factor especially if the eggs are laid in December I had one egg not hatch until the 23rd day (unless I got confused on the calendar which could have happen also). When you have 66 trips around the sun anything is possible when it comes to stupidity.
