I have three groups of chicks in my brooder right now. They will be 3 weeks, 2 weeks, and 1 week tomorrow or Saturday. If I just had the 3 week chicks, I would definitely have them on shavings by now but, with the one week old chicks, I haven't yet.

How soon can I get rid of the paper towels? I think the shavings will be cleaner and certainly waste less paper!

They need to be on paper towels for the first 3 or 4 days so they learn where there food is.

you only need paper for a day or two until they learn what food is.

You can most certainly take em off paper now, all of em. It's actually kind of bad for their legs. Don't worry. Just take the paper out.

I have always put mine on shavings but used newspaper under and around the feed dish so they could find the feed at first. Your week olds should be fine now, they will folow the rest to the feed dish
