That depends on several things depending on species.
A general rule is when they are about the same size, and can require some get acquainted protocalls.

I got in trouble for asking this in one thread, but it really helps to know.... What type quail do you have?

No problem and that helps a lot. [IMG]
When they are about the same size, and put their pens close together even before you make the move so they can get acquainted.
Coturnix can be very dicey when mixing and matching birds that have not been hatched and brooded together, but it's not imposable.
Since you only have 2, you should have little problem. No nasty pecking order to run through.

6+ weeks of age for young to grown birds, but put their cages next to each other as soon as you can. It helps if you first mix the birds in a totally new pen to both, but if that's not an option I would go largest bird to smallest birds pen.

Also, if I run into trouble with compatibility, I'll use an entirely new pen in which young (but grown) are placed with older birds so it's a new experience for all. This way, none of the quail will have already established themselves in the pen (in terms of pecking order) and are less likely to go after others.
