When do baby chicks leave their mama?

How old are chicks when they are pretty much independent from their mama, including sleeping at night? Mine are six and seven weeks old and are so big that I can't imagine they would still be sleeping under mama at night (if they had one).

My BO quit "mothering" her chicks at about 7 weeks. She quit calling them for treats ~ instead ate them herself and chased them off when they tried to sleep under her. I felt so sorry for them as they didn't understand why she was treating them like that. They did fine on their own.
