When do I add grit/sand?

How soon should I add grit to their run? I wanted to make them a dust bath thing in a big rubber maid feed pan and that got me to thinking about the grit. I guess I really need to go buy a book.

If you add sand to that dust bath, you don't need grit.

Thanks BooBoo'smama, they are almost 5 weeks old. Any recipes for a dust bath? I have read one person said sand, ashes, dirt, and diotimaceous earth...? Any suggestions appreciated.

Mine are still on the enclosed porch so I just use sand. Some add DE if they think they have Lice or Mites...I will probably do this when we get the run finished and create a dust bath spot for them with sand. I do not recall the benefit of ashes...I don't have them available so will not be adding it. YMMV

Good luck with those babes...amazing how quickly they are not babies any longer. I have kittens running around on the porch, too...want one! [IMG]
