I have 8 peas all approaching about a year old. When do the eyes in the train start to appear? Most of the male necks are now bright blue but the train still has little color. I've read that the train will grow until 3 years of age.

    Thanks,

    Jeff

I've only had peacocks for a few years but what I've learned is that a male won't get his long tail until he is 2 or 3. Each year after that it will get longer and longer. When my 6 year old molted last year, his longest feather was 4.5 feet long. Last year my 1 year old had tail feathers that looked like a peahen. He would fan out his tail and he looked so funny but it was cute to see him wooing the other females. I'm not an expert but am having fun learning as I go.

Peacocks start getting the eye feather at 2 yr. long train at 3 yr , yes at 4 or 5 little longer. Now the indias will breed at 2 yr old.

We just got back from Jamaica, and the Sandles Whitehouse had 6 of them at the resort. They just take care of themselves, wandering around wherever they want to. They've learned to jump up on the outside tables to eat leftovers off the plates. They took food right from my hand too.

I would love to have some, not sure what the chickies would think though.

Thats the thing about spaldings, they can take after either side. So yes a 2yr old male can breed, the higher % of green the more likely they will need to be older.

Sure there are 2 yr old that are 7/8 % that have breed, but not very many. Had a 3/4 % that did at 2yr.

Yep, but Wild Thing has always been a special bird. I got him and his brother when they were about 8 weeks old and he was really different. At that age he was considerably larger than his brother and also much more curious and boisterous. right out of the box he jumped up on the perch and just looked me in the eye. Within a week he was eating grass hoppers from my hand and would always run around and do a dance whenever I entered the pen(thats how he got his name). He grew faster and larger than the other peafowl by far. by 2 yrs. he had about 50 eye feathers in his small train so I stuck an older purple hen in with him just for grins. even when the hen started setting I figured nothing would come of it. I was shocked when 2 of the eggs hatched. So like I said, he's always been a precocious bird. I'll try to get some pics so you can see him. He free ranges with 2 purple hens and 2 juvenile spaldings.

would love to see some pics of him, at 7/8 they are usually wild as all get out, just like the pures, you got luck there all the way around sounds like.
