When to let them roam the yard?

I am new to keeping chickens and I'm kind of worried about letting them out of the run. How old should they be before I let them wander my yard? I'm worried they won't go back into the run/coop when I need them to. I have 5 chicks that are 6 weeks old and 4 that are 4 weeks old. They have a super secure run with 11 sq feet of space per bird, but we live in the woods, and I'm worried about hawks mostly....My dog has already been around them and is very good with them. She thinks they are puppies. We have a nice lawn and a lot of mulched bushes they would probably love to scratch around. How to you get them to go back into the run when you want them to? I only want them outside when I'm out there with them, or at least our dog. She's very protective.
