when to open nesting boxes?

I have 2 Americauna's that are about 18 weeks. I've been told that the nesting box needs to be closed so that don't use it as a "bathroom". It is the same height as the roost I believe. When should I open it and do I leave it open all day once I do open it? Thanks - I'm new at this.

you do leave it open all day you can probably just open it up now
