When to place the dummy eggs?

Hey there everybody,

I was just wondering when a good time would be to place our fake, ceramic eggs in the nesting boxes for our 7 and 9 week old pullets? What age is good to show them where to plop those eggs?

I suggest 16 weeks. Don't get your hopes up because it does not happen a whole lot, but I have had a pullet start to lay at 16 weeks.

Ok, so no need to until just about the time they begin to lay?

And can I use wood shavings in the nesting boxes, or do they prefer straw for that?

You can never predict when they will begin to lay. Earlier is safer.
Straw is nicer because they can arrange it into a nest and they can't kick it out.
