haha, so after I hatch the chicken eggs I have now, I have decided to go on the hunt for Cochin Eggs! I want Black ones soooo bad. I have been looking online for a nice friendly breed (good around kids of course) that is also a layer of bigger sized eggs. I have fell head over heels in love with them! I have already talked to Kevin about a big Coop (measured it out today at 35 deep, 30 wide and 15 Tall (going to be right up against a barn (car port design over hang) that we are going to make just for Cochins! Then we also have plans for Ducks and a Pond now. Since He has agreed to never telling me No, I have mentioned that he can get a few for himself, like a few more sumtras and maybe a few more game hens. hehehe

so where does this all stop? will there ever be an end?

It ends....or becomes too much.....when the feed bill is no longer affordable and it's no longer fun and is too much of a job.

Good news and bad news!

Bad news: there is no end

Good news: there is no end

I don't know if there will ever be a point of no more fun. Feed bill is do-able, I think Kevin is just wanting to get his hands dirty. I will add the big barn coop will also include a yard run.

First off build that coop bigger! You may think it's big enough right now but you'll end up getting more birds then you think

Cochins aren't that good of layers but they sure are excellent broodies (moms/sitting on eggs)

And theres never an end

haha I will have to tell Kevin we need the other half of the barn too then. haha I guess we will just have to sell the boat.

Sorry to say, like everyone else, there is no stopping point!!

I started 3 years in may, with 20 laying hens, thinking that was way to many. I only wanted about 10-12 but the minimum order was 25. So minus the 5 roos I had 20 hens. Wasn't going to order any more and I didn't, until last year. Then almost went overboard. Bought 6 at tsc. My advise is DO NOT go in there. Even with the very good intention of "I'm just going to look". DON"T Take a designated non-chicken person with you, if you go. That might not even work! When the fever hits, nothing can stop you!!!

Then, with my fever still raging, I ordered 16 more from a local hatcherie that didn't have but a 6 minimum. Now I never get rid of my older ladies. About 5-6 of them are still laying. So with the first flock I started with, added with the ones I bought last year minus the roos that we gave away and minus our handsome roo we bought from a friend who I think died of a heart attack about 3 weeks ago (the roo, not the friend!)

, and the hen, ( I think she died of a broken heart) who passed a few days later we still have 21 hens.

Oh, did I mention, I just ordered 12 MORE!!!

They will arrive the end of May! I ordered a couple of different breeds than I already have. Chickens are like potatoe chips. I want to try them ALL!!

I know you want your cochins!! they are so sweet!! We had one little cochin roo as our rare breed free chick in our first bunch. He was so sweet!!!

but he got sick and I treated him for a couple of months, but nothing worked and he just got worse. We finally decided he was suffering to much. So make that coop LARGE!! We built ours big enough for 25 chickens. Then my dh found an old hen house someone want to give away, so he loaded it on a trailer, brought it home and fixed it up and now we have 2 chicken houses!!! We will fill that one up with our new arrivals!!

So have fun!! You are starting on a great adventure!!

Well, I picked up my Duck Eggs Last Night from BYC member NellaBean (sp?) and plus a sweet Mini Rex bunny from her as well! Well I found an ad on CL today from a hatchery that delivers to Knoxville! Oh I think Kevin is going to die! They have Black Cochin and Jersey Giant Chicks right now and their next order this way is on the 31st!! They aren't too bad on prices either, sexed pullets start out at 2.50 each and no shipping!!!! I also talked to the hatchery about maybe 2 baby ducklings to hold me over until mine hatch, or as I will tell Kevin, they will be my back up plans... just in case.
