Sorry to say, like everyone else, there is no stopping point!!
I started 3 years in may, with 20 laying hens, thinking that was way to many. I only wanted about 10-12 but the minimum order was 25. So minus the 5 roos I had 20 hens. Wasn't going to order any more and I didn't, until last year. Then almost went overboard. Bought 6 at
tsc. My advise is DO NOT go in there. Even with the very good intention of "I'm just going to look". DON"T Take a designated non-chicken person with you, if you go. That might not even work! When the fever hits, nothing can stop you!!!
Then, with my fever still raging, I ordered 16 more from a local hatcherie that didn't have but a 6 minimum. Now I never get rid of my older ladies. About 5-6 of them are still laying. So with the first flock I started with, added with the ones I bought last year minus the roos that we gave away and minus our handsome roo we bought from a friend who I think died of a heart attack about 3 weeks ago (the roo, not the friend!)
, and the hen, ( I think she died of a broken heart) who passed a few days later we still have 21 hens.
Oh, did I mention, I just ordered 12 MORE!!!
They will arrive the end of May! I ordered a couple of different breeds than I already have. Chickens are like potatoe chips. I want to try them ALL!!
I know you want your cochins!! they are so sweet!! We had one little cochin roo as our rare breed free chick in our first bunch. He was so sweet!!!
but he got sick and I treated him for a couple of months, but nothing worked and he just got worse. We finally decided he was suffering to much. So make that coop LARGE!! We built ours big enough for 25 chickens. Then my dh found an old hen house someone want to give away, so he loaded it on a trailer, brought it home and fixed it up and now we have 2 chicken houses!!! We will fill that one up with our new arrivals!!
So have fun!! You are starting on a great adventure!!
