I'm adding on to the family in spring. I need a breed that is really cold-hardy (tonight is clear and cold; temp at 22:30 is -3 and heading down). I am not worried about winter egg production, and I have two hens that will do the setting for me.

Am I overlooking a breed? I like to have chickens that are on the ALBC list.

    Thanks

Have you ever considered a chantecler ??
The roo's have a cushion comb which you don't have to worry about frostbite and they are a good dual purpose bird.

My orpingtons do fine in the winter as well, as do my wyandottes and cochins. I'm in Northern Michigan and winter is just toooooo long and cold.

I think that buff Orpingtons might be the most cold hardy, but they both are.

I have both, they are fine in the cold and have been laying well all winter.

Hello - I have both breeds and they are doing fine in our mountain climate (3400 elevation). Very good layers year round.

Well, I'm too late but, just for good measure I was going to say that both are cold hardy.

I'm leaning toward the Buff O.

Last summer we went to the zoo; they have a neat Barnyard exhibit. I took 5 or 6 pics each of the Buff Os and a gorgeous Sicilian Buttercup rooster. And maybe 3 pics each of my kids.

Uh . . . I think this chicken thing is getting out of hand. [IMG]
