I have a customer that loves the "color" dozen of EE's and Marans but was asking if any are speckled. She likes to display the eggs on her dining room table in a crystal bowl.

Welsummers! I have one who lays every day, brown speckledy eggs, and often double yolkers.

Well, I get a speckled brown egg every day, but I'm not sure which of the girls is laying it. Not the Lakenvelders, those are white eggs. Not Rebecca, she's the EE laying the green one. Not Lacey the SLW, she produces a very lightly tinted browny-pink egg - she got out twice and laid her egg(s) under the Adirondack chair, so I know which eggs are hers.

So, that leaves Matilda the Black Australorp, or Greta the brown sex-link, Buffy the Orpington, or Bernadette the Cuckoo Marans... no, wait, SHE lays the really dark brown eggs, so cross her breed off the suspect list.

Yup, my wellies lay speckled eggs. They just started laying this week and here's my new and improved egg basket. The eggs are actually darker than the photo shows. (The EE's eggs in the lower right are green, but don't look like it in the photo) The one to the right was lightly speckled, but yesterday's egg (not pictured) was more speckled.

We got a brown speckled egg from one of our Marans' yesterday but the day before that it was just plain brown.

Marans lay nice speckles on their eggs now and then, Welsummer eggs are usually pretty speckled, and Welsummer cross eggs are a lot like Quail eggs.
