Which breed lays the prettiest dark brown eggs.
Quote:From what I've seen on BYC....Welsummers and Cuckoo Marans do.
Black copper marans
Depends on what you mean by pretty good quality Black Copper Marans probably lay the darkest eggs. But I am partial to Wellsummers because they lay pretty speckled eggs and lay more then Marans.
How much less does Marans lay than Welsummers?
Can you post pictures of the different eggs of these chickens?
Quote:Well at peak of lay in spring my Marans gave me 3 or 4 eggs a week and my Wellsummers gave me 6 or 7 a week.
I think Wynette has fabulous Marans eggs. (from her pics) They are incredibly dark.
Bargain also has some Copper Black Marans, although I haven't seen pics of her eggs, she has beautiful birds. I hatched some of her Welsummer eggs, and they were nice and dark. (clay pot color) Some were speckled and some not. I hatched out 2 pullets, so I can't wait for those nice dark eggs.
Here's a past post from Wynette's auction showing the eggs. From what I understand, as the hens get older, the color of the eggs lighten some.
And here's an old auction from Bargain's Marans showing their egg color.
And this shows Bargains egg color for her welsummers.
What about Penedesencas?!?!
Not to distract from the Marans or Welsummers, especially Wynette's, but they are very dark egg layers!
