I'm not sure which of my hens are laying which eggs. I'd like to know because I only want to hatch out eggs from certain hens.

I have:

1 Ameraucana/EE with the puffy cheeks (who doesn't lay blue or green eggs - don't know what she's laying)
1 Black Australorp
1 Brahma
1 Buff Orpington
1 Welsummer (the 3 darkest eggs in the pics are hers)
1 Silver Laced Wyandotte
1 Rhode Island Red

I only have eggs from 5 of the hens in the pictures, and they are grouped together according to similarity.

Welsummer eggs:

???

???

I would especially like to know who lays the very light colored egg on the left:

Top 3 are Welsummers, and I don't know the rest.

Any ideas??

Unless you separate them it will be hard to tell. The other option would be to use the food coloring trick, use different color on each hen. Put the coloroing on their vent and it will streak the egg with that color.

Oh! What a great idea, I'm gonna try that! Thank you.

So I tried it and it didn't work at all... Am I don't it wrong? I put a drop of food coloring right on the hens' vents', and they laid eggs with no marks on them.

Don't really know how its done. Never tried it. I just put the hens I want in the run with the rooster and hatch all the eggs that I gather. I do have mine put in runs of the same breed.

I have two Buff Orpingtons, one lays a tan egg and the other lays a large cream egg like the one you posted.

I have 4 light brahmas and they all lay different looking eggs...it can be hard to tell even within the same breed.

I agree with draye just put you rooster over the hen in separate pin. The other ways would be to look into getting a nesting box that traps the hen inside when she goes to lay her eggs. Or do what I do. On Saturday and Sunday I'll work outside as much as possible. I have colored (different colors for each hen ) tie straps on the legs of each hen. I'll then keep an eye out to see who's going in to lay. Once I here her sing out her "I layed a egg song" I'll remove the egg, and wright on it the color of her leg band. Now most hens will lay different eggs weight throughout a week, but the shade of color (most of the time) will stay consistent, that is of course she has no health issues.
Good luck
