I also posted this on the Baby Chicks thread, but realized later this might be a better place....

I just got a chick from a farm that free ranges their chickens, so it is likely not a purebred. Fine by me. However, I can't find any photos of this chick anywhere to determine what type of chicken it will most resemble when it matures. I don't have a photo to post at the moment, so thought I'd just describe it. It is all white with just a few black speckles. Almost like a dalmation dog with just a faint scattering of spots, but predominantly white in color.

Anyone know what kind of chicken it will most likely be, even if not purebred? Thanks for any ideas. I'm just too impatient to wait until it feathers out.)

    Must see pictures.
These are the things to consider:
    Size
    Comb
    Leg color
    How many toes?
What are the possibilities of parent breeds if you know them? If it did come from two purebred parents, it is possible to come close to guessing them, but not anything you can say "It is a cross between this and that." If you know the breeder/farmer, then you can ask what they have running around in their free range space together.
good luck. I will check back when you get pictures.

Thanks. The chick is white, so not yellowish at all. It has 5 toes and some "hair" on feet. It is a mix, so could be a breed that typically doesn't have the hairy feet as well as silkie, right? Silkies have the 5 toes, right?

Oh, the people I got it from said it could be part Lakenvelder or something else German sounding.

Quote:With 5 toes it is NOT a Lakenvelder. There are lots of other breeds that have German sounding names, but the other breed that comes to mind is the Favorelle that has feathered feet and 5 toes, and of course, the Silkies. I think there is another but I am drawing a blank on that.
    Post pictures though.

Anything crossed with a white Leghorn will be predominately white with some small black spots

Here is what I just got from online:

Dorking, Faverolle, Houden, Sultan, and Non-bearded Silkie have a fifth toe.

Hmm. The white leghorn on the BYC breeds section looks a lot like my chick in shape and whiteness. Seems like a good possibility. I will post a picture this evening to help get a final decision. Thanks for your help.

See the white chicken in the top center of this photo. It has black skin and fives toes. The "white" feathers are actually more of a light cream. Thanks in advance for any help!

The black skin and 5 toes is a dead give away, it is at least part Silkie. It is cute as a dickens! The color is "Splash", it is a white with black spotting randomly spread on the body, which means it is from a blue line of birds. It takes either 2 splash, or a 2 blue, or 1 blue and 1 splash to get a splash colored chick. Perhaps this can narrow it down. It is possible it is purebred Silkie, but does it have a bare neck in the front? Could be a cross with a naked neck, and since I see one in the picture, that could be your cross right there....Naked Neck and Silkie.
    Good luck!
