So during our usual free range time, "something" killed one of our ducks. Everyone was out: a full grown turkey, 6 chickens, and 2 other ducks. The poor duck who was taken did have a slight limp. (she was actually quite bad about a month ago, I had her in one of those portable chicken squares that I moved around to different places 2x a day) I would of put her back in if I thought she was too slow.

It just bothers me to no end to know WHAT it was that killed her?!! I guess everyone must think this when this happens to a bird in their flock? (this is obviously our first!) They are in a fully fenced off yard to themselves. It's probably 3/4 open 1/4 sheltered with trees. They have a really big coop that has a full roof on it (about 30' x 10'), and she was found in the fenced off part, behind the coop, in the sheltered part of the yard. She was completely gutted, only her head, spine, feet and feathers were left.

We do have neighbors with huge cats that I've seen lurking on our property, but they usually will run if they see me. We also have eagles and hawks that will fly over. This duck didn't have much going for her. She probably was slower due to the limp, and she WAS white! Such a beautiful crested swedish blue!! Ugh. Any of those are probably going to come back for seconds, huh? Do birds of prey eat their kill on the ground?? There are coyotes, possums, and raccoons too, but I've not ever seen much of them during the day. (totally daytime!!) I'm totally thinking cat or bird? What do you all think??

Yes, birds of prey will eat their kill on the ground. Especially if it is a big kill like a duck. I had a chicken-hawk try to take one of my silkie hens once but he couldn't get off the ground with her. A duck is much bigger than the silkie was. If it got one it will be back for more eventually. Birds of prey don't always come back right away but they will be back. I hope you can figure out how to keep them safe.

The more my husband and I discussed it last night, the more we were thinking it was a bird of prey. There are always eagles and hawks in the area. ( we live near Padilla Bay) I guess I'm lucky to have gotten this far in our journey (about 2 years) of free ranging before anything has been killed. :( Yep. No one is free now. Even the poor turkey. I'll be darned if something wild gets to eat her!! That's thanksgiving!!! Ohh... it just makes me mad!!!

Eagles will carry the food away... Hawks on the other hand... Crush it right there than eat it right there... & yes they eat all the breast first, than move on to the innards...
So it was likely a hawk, it will be back.. & sooner rather than later.. You can however hang CDs shinny tinfoil bits ect around your coop as a detourent birds of pray are tough ones to get rid of!

The more I get to think about it, the more I think that is right.^ It was probably a hawk. I think a "red-tailed hawk". Its been 2 days, and we made a nice moveable cage with pvc pipe and chicken wire. It will hold the ducks and chickens nicely. We DO have a full sized female turkey left. I was thinking, she's safe?? But I just went to Wiki and read some stuff on red tailed hawks, and it said there that they can also eat female wild turkeys?? (GREAT!!

) So I guess I'm back to living guarded!! The reason I think of that specific hawk, is because I just noticed one flew awfully low in that yard when I was just out there! So it could be back already? I'm so ticked off. They are like my other kids!!
