Our first broody chick hatched this morning Don't worry, I didn't pull our broody,Sage, off to take the picture. Our "babysitter" hen who insists on sitting on the eggs when Sage leaves to eat thought it was time again this morning. Sage came over to get me and I snapped the picture while removing Torchic

So I had the egg marked as belonging to River

But I'm thinking I made a mistake and it belongs to Phantom

This is dad

Is there any way this chick came from River??

We think Phantom and Comet might be half siblings and we were wondering if he also carried the lavender gene. If this chick does belong to Phantom, I guess that answers our question

Yes, it belongs to Phantom. She has gorgeous coloring!

As an update, I have checked and rechecked the eggs from River and Phantom vs the pictures I took of the marked eggs before giving them to Sage. I am very sure that I did not make a mistake marking them. Our little girl() is also white not lavender, so I guess River is the mom. Any ideas on the genetics behind her coloring?

Oh, that’s very simple. It’s caused by recessive white (lavender is also recessive, but obviously not the same.)
Recessive white, unlike dominant white, can show dark colors and patterning in chick down, which is why you saw the headspot and the grey on her as a chick.

Thanks I had considered recessive white, but didn't realize they could have the grey baby fluff.
