Hi Im new to chickens. I went looking today for what I had decided on; leghorns. I think they are beautiful and are good egg layers. I went to our local feed supply they told me they dont carry that "special kind". Whatever that means. The tractor supply didnt carry them either, they had to same chicks as our local feed supply store. I know I can order them through a magazine but I have to order at least 25. I just need about 4. Why dont stores carry them?

I don't know why the stores don't carry them -- but I do know that can order a small number of chicks from My Pet Chicken. Just be aware that what you don't spend on chicks will be made up for in the shipping cost. From what I understand, Ideal has a $25 minimum, rather than a 25 chick minimum, but again small orders often incur additional shipping charges to insure the chicks have a chance to arrive safely.

Where are you located? Some here may have some they'd be willing to sell to you if you're close enough.

I don't know why they wouldn't carry leghorns other than they are commonly used by the big egg producers....I am partial to the Brown Leghorns....You might want to do a search for hatcheries in your state or a state nearby...I know that Ideal does sell less than 25....and I think mypetchicken.com sells even fewer....check around, someone will do it....

I think the feed stores tend to sell the calmest, most popular farmyard birds. They want people to keep the birds and buy feed. Leghorns are a little too energetic for many and there is not much meat. Plus, leghorns are small and would not eat as much feed as dual purpose breeds.
