Why does my BR hen look so weird?

Hey everybody, One of our barred rock “hens” look a little different from the rest; she also looks nothing like our rooster. She is the top hen of the flock, two times the size of all the other hens, darker than the other barred rocks and has a monster comb? We raised her since she was a day old and she is 7 months now.

I would bet her ovary was damaged. Hens only have one functional ovary, and when it is damaged, hens can take on characteristics of roosters, and they will never lay. I think that is what has happened here.

Agreed. She is SUPER masculine looking. Very unique.

It's not a breed that has hen feathering for roosters. She is a hen that has a huge hormone imbalance. Likely due to a damaged ovary.

She is so pretty!!! Probably not pure, but I cant be sure. She is a girl though.

Chicken genetics are so amazing. She is very pretty. Very wild looking but very pretty

They are!!! Our other BRS have layed almost everyday for the past two and a half months! And I have never seen her anywhere near a nesting box!!!

Have you ever had the same with one of your hens before?

It's possible. I had a hen that, towards the end of her life, began acting more and more like a rooster. She even started growing spurs. She passed away shortly after though. She was 5 years old.

Can surgery fix that?
There is very expensive surgery on humans that can possibly fix that when happens on humans
