I bought a couple at an auction that only have 4 toes too. I know that if you are breeding them that you shouldnt breed the ones that have 4 toes because it can pass down to there babies. Is it possible that one of the parents only have 4 toes? Also the 5th toe will not grow in it should be there as soon as it has hatches.

I always thought that 5 toes were dominant.

Shucks, perhaps you could develop a new breed of silkies w/ 4 toes!

Your chicken has some bad genes somewhere down the line. A good breeder wouldnt breed a eight or nine toed silkie. Not your fault . It is in the genetic background.

It happens, even if both parents have 5 toes each... It's somwhere in the genes.

The chick could still make 5 toed babies !!

But shouldn't be bred as it will just pass on the undesirable genes.
