So it's a beautiful day out and I'm sitting on the front porch, reading and watching my ducks. I have the ducklings penned up on the grass so they can forage but still be safe, and my Cayuga is freely working on some "landscaping" for me. Not only is she beautiful and fun to watch, but as she does her thing I am thinking about how awesome it is to have her as a pet!
The kids adore her (she runs to greet them and give them ducky hugs when they get home from school), she is a weed and slug eating machine, she poops a lot -sure- but it all goes into ferilizing the lawn or garden in one way or another (hay is put in compost for the garden), she keeps my pond mosquito free....and even provides us with nutritious EGGS along with feathers my daughter loves to use in crafts...need I go on?

So not only are my duckies great sweeties for cuddling, but also a great addition to the home for practical purposes!!!

Then there's my dog....what has she done today??? Make a mess in the kitchen and sunbathe on the porch...

I just started our chicken flock when I decided I wanted ducks for eggs and slug/snail patrol. THEY ARE SO MUCH BETTER THAN CHICKENS! I love the heck out of them! They are funny and cute and always seem happy. I agree with you about the dogs...pretty useless when you think about it.

I find myself asking my dogs often what they've done to earn their kibble recently since the ducks give us eggs for their food - they still haven't given an answer LOL
