I have these two 4 wk old (hatchery) Creme Brabanters (and a friend got the other 3 from the same order) - and one has a well developed black comb while the other has next to none (hers are the same - at least one has a big black crest and at least one does not)

can anyone tell me why??

some do and some don't.

Cull out the ones that don't have a crest or muff (beards).

Somewhere in the background, not sure of the exact information but Brabanters and Spitzhaubens may have been crossed with Polish breed at one time by the hatchery.

so the one without a crest now will not grow one??? that would be pretty bad odds considering at least 2/5 that came from the hatchery do not.... *sigh

It happens but that is why we order more than we need up to 15 to 25 chicks to get a few good and acceptable chicks. Happened to me too with the Spitzhauben, having NO crest and it was from a breeder of non hatchery lines.
