Hello! I have a chicken that has a very wide eye. It has been like this for at least two weeks. It's diet has not changed. Layers crumbles and garden scrapes (lettuce, kale, tomatoes, strawberries, and rarely egg plant and other things.) All organic garden and maybe feed too, I'm not sure (I do give them medication when they need it though, so they are not technically organic). a little less than a month ago my chickens were attacked by a raccoon. So could this be post traumatic stress? I don't know if it started right after that though. Her sister was hurt in the attack and was left with a nasty flesh wound, bruised lung, and paralyzed leg. She rarely leaves her sister's side now.
    Some more info:
    • 3 3/4 years old
    • rhode island red
    • purchased from a feedstore
    • sees fine still
    • treated for mites last week as a preventative (did not have them, it was just time)
    • hen
    • lays regularly, but less lately (I think this is unrelated... The days are short)
    • acting fine
    • not broody
    • weather here is 50-59 during the day and 35-49 at night
    • little rain, and what there is of it is warm
    • sleeps in a well ventilated but non drafty bend new coop
    • lives with 4 other hens and one roo

    That covers everything and more....

That is a bad picture... I will have a better one and comparison picture in the morning.

    Thanks!

I'm not sure what you are seeing - the eye looks fine. Can you post a pic of both eyes for comparison??

You can see the white at the top of it. It's kind of an egg shape

It might be just a defect--it doesn't look like any illness.

I have a few chickens like that. they have been through fowl pox since august. some of them have eyes like in the pic above and some almond shape eyes. I am not sure if area around their eyes is slightly swollen. and when they get better their eyes return to normal. I don't know what the problem is.

at the moment I have a roo and a hen that got foamy eyes, roo - almond shape and hen - round shape eye. 1 of them is coughing bloody mucus I don't know which one. I brought them inside, treat with antibiotics and watch them. they are sleeping now and seem to be a bit better in a warm room.

Oh my gosh! I hope that they are okay! Sorry that that happened to you. Having sick chickens is always so sad and stressful!
