I have had a problem with loss of egg production and honestly tried to put it off as molting and then the heat etc... It has been almost three months of this. For several days I have tried going in at random times because I was pretty sure the hens were eating them and sure enough several times I have found the remnants. But........now I don't think it's the hens doing it. This morning I swear I saw a mouse scurry out of one of the boxes. Can they eat eggs? Mind you we are talking little field mice not rats. The mice we have here are maybe 2 inches long at most. Not very big at all.

I'd be really surprised. If an egg were already broken, I can see them trying some of the contents but I just don't think they'd be capable of breaking one open themselves.

I don't know if they have sharp teeth or not as I am not one for holding them! I do know that one got in our garage and tore all the rubber goop they put in between the concrete and wall and it's some hard stuff. I just figured if they could chew that up then they might be able to eat an egg.

Yes. They can chew through solid wood. An egg shell wouldn't be much of an obstacle.

Worse, they carry diseases and they will be peeing in your chicken food.

So how do you get rid of them? I can't set traps in there as the chickens are too curious and I hate to put out poison for fear that one of the chickens will get ahold of it or eat one of the dead mice that ate the poison. Grrr this frustrates me so.

We Are having the same problem but the mice are actually taking the eggs out of the coop to another location. They carry it out in their mouths and go right through the chicken wire. Maybe when the girls eggs start getting bigger they won't be able to do it anymore, but for now I will be setting traps.
