So this is a crazy story! I have a girlfriend who is a marine biologist and she takes DNA sample from sharks all day long at sea. So today she shows up at my door with a 2 day old baby mallard that had apparently been caught in the current and swept offshore. I got him to eat and drink and poop! So it looks like he/she is good. He wasn't too happy under the light in the box so I thought maybe my female pekin might take to him. She is days away from hatching her eggs and she is a very broody gal. I havenever see a pekin sit like her! So I pushed her off of her nest and put the baby in her nest. She instantly preened him and sat right by him nuzzling him. It has been 2 hrs now and I went to check on them and I din't see the baby. I called out to the lil guy and his head popped out from underneath her and then she instantly pushed him back under. Will this work? Would she try to kill him right away or later? Should I take him out? HELP! After being 2 miles offshore and getting picked up by shark wranglers I really want him to make it!

It sounds like she's accepted him, so that's good, but be aware she is now most likely going to abandon the rest of her eggs to take care of him if they don't hatch in the next day or so.

Thank you so much for responding. She probably would have killed him right away right? I will watch to see if she will abandon her eggs. So far she is sitting on him and the eggs. She hasn't left her eggs in a loooooong time, I have never had a broody pekin but she is VERY protective of her eggs! Thanks again for responding I am just so worried for the lil baby.

So morning update....she is still sitting...when the little baby comes out she pushes him right back under! So hopefully her own eggs will hatch any day now and they can be one big happy family!

How many more days until the eggs should hatch?
If more than another day or two, she may not wait for them to hatch before taking off from the nest with the new mallard and getting that little one out for some food and water.

It should be 3 more days max. I have been feeding the baby and getting him out for water as well. So if she abandons her own eggs what should I do ...incubate? Fingers crossed she has dealt with so much with this clutch...first her mate tampled some then a crow broke in and ate some...she is down to two heathy looking eggs. She will not come off of them at all anymore because of all the drama. In fact she won't even tolerate me right now! THANKS SO MUCH FOR ALL AND ANY ADVICE!!!
