My dogs were out when I got home today. They got out because someone forgot to lock the door before they left... Well anyways, they killed some rabbits and tested some wire on the hutches and run of my coop.

Here is some chicken wire wrapped around some old 2x4 welded wire on the run. The dogs messed up the chicken wire a bit.

Here is another section on the run. I am not sure why they tried so hard here because there is a board behind the wire anyways :idunno
They shredded the chicken wire and bent it up, they did not get past the 2x4.

Here is another spot on the run that they tested. Again just easily popping holes in the chicken wire.

Here is an interesting one. The green wire is some cruddy 2x4 wire that is really weak. I can rip it apart with my hands. The other wire is just regular welded 2x4 steel wire from home depot.

So this stuff got destroyed, along with some thin boards.

Here is the same cage as the previous picture. This one is on top. The dog jumped up there and popped the 2x4 off, that was mainly because of my crappy job at nailing. One of the dogs was actually stuck inside of this. It's a chicken tractor btw. I had a buck in there.

And here is hardware cloth vs a dog. This was on another rabbit hutch that was also holding a buck.

So, that old 2x4 on the run held up well. I am not sure what the difference is between that and the newer 2x4 on the hutch other than the stuff on the run is thicker, about 17 years older, and a little rusty.

(just the old wire on the run)

Thanks for posting pictures.
It is possible that the older welded wire is American made. The newer inexpensive welded wire some big box stores carry is Chinese made and I can pull it apart with my hands. There are still American companies that make wire fencing. It isn't cheap but it holds up past a lifetime. Red Brand is one.

Those are some great examples of what a determined dog with a prey drive can do... I've known dogs to chew into sheds, and even tear up 2x8 porch steps trying to get to a cornered critter.

I could hear a dog a mile or so away last summer barking nonstop for about 3 days at a neighboring farm who's owners are weekenders, so I went up and found where it had been digging and chewing up the barn on that place, trying to get at some sort of critter... I ran it off, and didn't hear it again after that... but left alone they will sometimes camp out and just worry a structure or pen till they get in.

That is probably it then. There definitely is a big difference, the old wire hardly even bent.

I had a problem dog that could even get through the heavy duty 2 x 4 welded wire. With some pens the big idiot jumped on an appeared to bounce on it to wear the welds out. The same dog was almost able to chew through a chain link fence and it might have succeeded if I did not intervene.

Wonders if dog started biting at edge of hutch floor?
..just trying to see how a dig could get purchase in the middle of flat surface.
The bite was actually just right in the middle. I have not done anything as far as repairs go so I can go and try to get some more pictures.
