Hi Everyone!

I am new to BYC I have lurked on here for awhile and done light researching through Grit and Mother Earth Magazine. My ultimate goal is to raise some heritage breed true to standard but if that proves to be too difficult or costly then I would also enjoy having a variety of eggs (blue, brown, white). I think I would start with one type at a time.

So far I am interested in:
- Blue:: Aracana or Wheaten Ameraucanas
- Brown:: Marans (french black copper seemed nice)
- White:: andalusian or Dorking

i'm sure I will have a lot of questions and make a lot of stupid mistakes :p
I just wanted to introduce myself and open up the lines of communication if anyone has any advice!

I am located in Western New York (in the rural areas around Buffalo) I want to research before getting my chickens, so that I can do it right...and I want something more unique than whatever I could pick up at the local feed store.

I have looked online at some sources (such as sand hill preservation) - they seem kind of expensive and also I would have to order like 25. I was thinking more along the lines of five of each since I'm doing a much smaller scale of things. How do people manage this? Do people get together with others (locally) and split an order? If so, how do you find out about it because this is something I would love to do. Or if I could buy just a few from someone locally? If anyone on this site has advice it would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you :D

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! The best way to find local birds is to post in your state thread for local breeders or as you mentioned people who would like to split an order with you. https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/231485/ny-chicken-lover

Also check out the BYC Buy-Sell-Trade section, there are several breeders who will do custom hatches or have hatching eggs who have a number of breeds, you might find one who has three or four breeds you are interested in... usually you will have to go with straight run (unsexed) chicks unless you get older birds (shipping is really expensive). https://www.backyardchickens.com/f/67/buy-sell-trade

for heritage breeds in general this is the main thread, https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/849075/heritage-large-fowl-phase-ii if you have a particular breed in mind, most of them will have thread of their own in the Breeds section, you should be able to find breeders on those with chicks or hatching eggs... and maybe people in your area who don't frequent the state forum.

Be sure to check out the BYC Learning Center, lots of good articles on all aspects of chicken keeping you'll find helpful. https://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/1/Learning_Center

Good Luck in your venture!

Welcome to the world of chickens!! You are looking at some very nice breeds. I don't keep any of them, but they sure are pretty. Definitely follow the links that Kelsie has provided. Lots of good reads in the learning center too.

So make yourself at home here on BYC and if you have any questions, that is what we are here for. Welcome to our flock!
