I went to close up my birds for the night and checked the nestbox to find the biggest egg ive ever had! I weighed it and its 89 grams (or .2 pounds)! Here is a pic. One of my cochin hens laid it, and they both usually lay eggs that are quite small. [Edit] I'm on my mobile and it wont let me upload a pic! [Edit 2] Ha! Love the new mobile version! Here is the photo!
that's pretty big for a Cochin, nut my buff orp layer a state record weighed .624 pound egg. It was a monster!
My daughter found an unusually large one the other day. It was laid by one of our Red sexlinks. It weighed .22 pounds and the eggs are normally around .15 pounds. Anyone know what causes them to lay larger eggs like that? I'm wondering if it is because of the colder weather and longer dark so they are laying as often but when they do, they are larger.
My hen usually lays eggs around 49 grams, or .11 pounds (they are tiny!) So this one was a big one for her, especially since she only began laying last week lol i dont know what causes it, but as long as it doesnt hurt them I dont mind it!
just to note, that egg had 2 yolks and enough whites for two eggs! lol i just realized i had never said!
