I initially looked into doing meal worm and earthworm farming, primarily with the goal of producing extra nutrition for the chickens but also for the benefit of the yard (well with the earth worms anyway).
Meal worms however look like a pretty low yield with a really long cycle time (16 week cycle time). Doing the math for two dozen birds (50% mix Austrolop and Rhode Island red) this does not seem like it's worth it. Looking at a commercial farm (see
) you have a huge density with not really a huge amount of product from what I could see. Earth-worm farming seems to offer a much lower overhead and higher yield.
Is anyone doing meal worms beyond a "treat only capacity"? How did you determine your sizing for this to be efficient?
What about earth worms?
Would love to hear your thoughts
Cheers
