My youngest hen (only 5 months!) just started laying last weekend. She laid three eggs and then stopped. Today I took a look at her vent to determine whether she is egg bound (she is so small, almost seems too small to be laying!) or just taking her time getting into the groove of laying and found a wound near her vent. It appears to be scabbed over--it is not raw-- and about the size of a quarter. It clearly causes her discomfort when I touch near it. All of the feathers have fallen out from the area. Has anyone seen anything like this before? What can I do to help her feel more comfortable? Or should I just leave it alone?
