Hello! New chicken owner here. I have a chicken that suddenly developed what I believe to be wry neck. Its neck is twisted upside down and the bird is basically immobile all day long. Every once in a while it rights itself, stands up and feeds and drinks, then crumbles back into the contorted position. Most of the time the birds eyes are closed.

I have been giving it vitamin E and selenium. Also purchased poultry cell, but have been inconsistent with that. I do help it to drink water. Unsuccessful with feeding it mush.

I guess a couple questions... is this wry neck? And then....I just wonder if I should put this bird out of its misery. Are we too far gone? This has been going on a week and I’m not seeing improvements. The only difference is that it’s closing its eyes more ... which would seem like that’s indicative of death approaching.

Really appreciate any insight! -Christine

I’m not an expert but it does seem like wry neck if not then idk what it would be, and that it’s in pretty bad shape, giving It vitamin E supplements is the right thing to do, try separating it from the flock and continue helping it eat and drink, it’s the best thing you can do right now if it persists I would consider putting it out of its misery because it’s quality of life just wouldn’t be good. But it’s up to you on how much longer youd like to wait and see if it’s condition gets better.

I think that Mareks disease could be a possibility with the wry neck, position of her legs under her and her age. I would keep up with the vitamins, and make sure that she is getting the vitamin E and some thiamine or B2. If you lose her, your state vet can test for Mareks with a necropsy, as long as the bidy is kept cold, but not frozen, and taken in on a weekday.

Thank you! I don’t think it could be Merrick’s because they were vaccinated against it...
