I have 2 Silver Laced Wyandottes and they are very quiet. Pretty too!

What do you already have? Do you have a quarantine area for the newbies? You'll have to look at the "big" picture" and not that its a holiday bearing gift...otherwise it may result in unpleasantries;)

But I will say...I do not like Wyandottes. I still have 8 hens but I will not replace them when the go.

I had one SLW hen (Pebbles), and she was quiet, somewhat reserved but not flighty, and so beautiful. She wasn't quite as friendly as some of the others, but she would tolerate some gentle petting while on the roost or nest. She was fine one day; the next day she was stretched out in the nest box, gone. [IMG] She didn't roam far when they freeranged, and was a dependable layer. I'd like to have a couple more...

    My reasons:
    1. Mean.
    2. Did not like to be handled at all.
    3. Killed other hens chicks.
    4. Killed their OWN chicks.
    5. Awful layers.

My wyandottes are some of my favorites. I have BLRWs and Blues and some SLW chicks. Mine are very friendly and not mean at all. Mine aren't hatchery birds tho so I think that can make a big difference.

I love wyandottes! None of mine have ever been mean, although they are standoffish, but so are all my chickens. I just dont have time to fondle hundreds of chicks a day, so they tend to be shy, and not like being picked up, regardless of the breed. Mine give me eggs every single day. They are great for cold climates as the rosecombs never freeze, the roosters are huge a majestic, and the extra roos cook up well. Wyandottes are hands down my favorite breed of chickens out of the 30 or so breeds I've raised. Orpingtons are quickly becoming #2, but I hate those single combs. I think we need rose combed orpingtons LOL.
