Now that GFF has finally imported this breed, I think it is time for it to have its own thread. Anyone have any outside of GFF? I suddenly find myself fascinated with Yamato Gunkei and want to learn more from others that may have them.

I got a surprise baby from GFF as part of a rare breed special :). Cute little bugger - the kids love it! Still very tiny

I got some from GFF in the rare breed special this week. They are so tiny. The tiniest one could barley walk and was trampled in the box. He was the only one that was grayish in color, and the first I pulled from the box. sadly he did not make it. Here's the whole group.[IMG]

How are your chicks getting along, I have been debating for sometime on buying some from GFF. They are not breeding right now, but I was told in the spring some chicks may become available. What is your take on them. What are they like and the pros and cons of their personalities. Have you had any issues with the hens or the cockerels?

Sadly I have none left. I lost 3 out of 5 as chicks so they seem to be sensitive in the first few weeks. They are very slow to feather in but do grow fast. I would plan on keeping them in the brooder longer or get them when the weather is warmer. We called them our funky gunkeis. The 2 I had left held their own very well with the large fowl breeds they were raised with. My boys loved them and you could bet money that any time you threw a worm into their pen it would be a Gunkei that would get it, even amount 40 other chickens. I'm waiting to try and get some more this coming summer. I lost one to a bear breaking into the coop and a hawk got the last one. They were not aggressive at all but not overly interested in people. We had lots of chicks at the time and did not get to socialize them to people much. They are small but muscular and heavy for their size. The 2 I had that survived were both cockerels so I can't speak for pullets. I enjoyed them enough to want to give them another try. I would recommend you try them too.

I am sorry you lost all of them.. You have helped me to make a decision. I am gong to go ahead and order I think 10, I love the look of game fowl, I just don't like the aggression part. I have malay on the way, so I am prepared to keep the cocks separate, I just did not want to keep theses little guys alone.

after they arrive ill come back and post a diary on them . It is so hard to find anyone who has had one or anyone who has had one on one dealings with the Gunkei making it even harder to make a knowledgeable decision on buying them...Thank you so very much! I hope your next ones do better.

Hello! I'm also debating on getting some from Green Fire Farms. Can anyone post some pictures? I'm moving away from orpingtons now and really want to get something exotic, any suggestions?
