I just wanted to shout it out to someone because I'm currently home alone. I was so worried my new gecko I bought on Saturday would not eat his gecko diet. The original owners were feeding him mostly crickets and I didn't want to deal with live bugs. I wasn't sure if he would switch on his own though and I thought for sure he'd starve! But nope! Last night he ate ALL the food I put in there. The night before it look like he took a few licks. His cage is already smelling better (Cricket filled poo is nasty stuff!) and he looks happy.

I'm hoping to have pictures soon. I'm going to let him finish settling til the end of the week.

Jordan, I always have some fear with a new animal! I always read about everything and there are so many things that go wrong. Research is good, but sometimes I over do it! [IMG] (And why didn't you warn me about how darn adorable these guys are? I can't stop looking at him...when I can find him at least!)

    Ameraucana mom,

I really like the leopards too. I had a difficult time choosing! I liked the leopards because I could have just kept it in the ten gallon tank I have and with the crested I will have to upgrade when he starts to get bigger. The main deciding factor was the live food. My mom does not like live food at all! I did find out that they can go a week without food (Which would have worked when I go away). I think the leopards are a bit easier to handle too. I think they might be my next reptile when I move out!

My daughter are pretty gentle, but she handles them alot. Compared to some other pets we have had, they are easy to keep without all the smell or constant cleaning. Plus they are cute little things !!! LOL !!

If you don't feed live crickets, then what did you feed him? We have a leopard gecko and I've always given crickets.

I think leopard geckos do need live good, but with crested geckos there is a special powdered diet you can buy to give them. You can still supplement with crickets or mealies, but it's basicallya complete diet on it's own. It actually smells like bananas and strawberries!

It's called created gecko diet, but I think now the company that makes it is called Pangea. The food is a bit different but my gecko liked it better (I order the watermelon flavor and it smells like fruit loops). She still eats like a pig! She'll be six this year.

ETA: I order it from Amazon in 16oz bags and it lasts forever.

FYI for those talking Leopard Geckos and do not know how to care for a Crested Gecko, Cresties do NOT eat insects for the majority of their diet. Cresties are frugivores. Their diet should consist of fruit based foods. And since humans can't replicate what is found on New Caledonia, they need to be fed something like Clark's Crested Gecko diet or Repashy's Crested Gecko diet, these are two popular and widely available diets. Human fruit baby food does not cut it for their nutritional needs, but can be used for extremely short periods of time in desperation.

It is definitely exciting when a new animal finally feels comfortable enough to eat. They often just need some peace and quiet to settle in. I always put a very thinly spread amount of food for newbies, so I could better observe if any was consumed. Sometimes a new home means a new diet, and it takes some hunger and curiosity for them to try the new stuff.
