I have a 3 month old Barred Rock cockerel who sits down a lot more than the pullets. He doesn't limp or have any visible problems, just sits down every few minutes to seemingly rest. I am wondering if this is normal for roos as he is my first one. We thought maybe he is more tired because he is growing faster? He's been doing this for over a month and is growing and otherwise healthy and frisky. Any ideas? I did look it up here and found one other question from someone 4 years ago that sounded exactly the same, but there were no solid answers. Thanks!

Hello! We've had several cockerels and it's not normal. That said, we did have a Welsummer roo that did the same thing right from a chick. He seemed a bit behind in development and maybe a little runty as well. It sounds like that hasn't always been the case with yours, so maybe you can keep an eye on him for other symptoms.

Sorry that this isn't really a solid answer, either. Maybe someone with more experience will jump in.

Thanks SIMZ,
He might've been doing this from chickhood. I didn't realize he was male until about a month ago when he got much bigger than everybody else and the kids seem to think he's been doing this all along. Did your roo grow out of it or live okay even sitting a lot? He seems so healthy otherwise.

Once he was old enough to start mating he seemed to pep up a bit, but would still have times when he would sit around more than the other chickens. We only kept him until he was 5 months, so I don't know how he would have done long term. He never seemed to be obviously sick and certainly seemed to enjoy his life. I will say that we were originally going to try to breed Welsummers, but didn't want to use him as our rooster because of that.

I was laughing today as my girls found the porch while free ranging, and they wandered around and then found the sunny spot..itt looks so awkward lol, they do this then they pop up like nothing is wrong
