I'm sorry to hear yours didn't recover. I've also noticed a thing with buffs and getting bum legs. Last year I had to cull the first buff from my original flock. My first rooster, who was six at the time, started high-stepping with one foot. Then that foot started dying after several months of...
I did not really check for egg binding, though I did feel her abdomen for anything hard and didn't feel anything. I haven't actually closely examined the bruising area for a while, but I did catch a glimpse of it and it didn't seem to have much of a change. I'm also fairly sure she is (or was, I...
Oh yeah I understand. I don't think most things suggested outside of actual veterinary care are diagnoses lol. I was also thinking about trying some topical stuff to see if that helps. So there's some things I can try, but I'm keeping the cancer idea in the back of my head.
Aaah shoot. I suppose if that's the case there's nothing to do but monitor. I think I will try to separate him from the girls for a bit to see if it get's better in case it's a hormone/over-mating issue. If it is cancer then of course that's not going to clear up, so I'll let him get the most...
Thank you. I did as you said with the paper towel and nothing at all came off on it. I got some more pics, I don't know if they're much better but I got different angles at least.
I've only been home on the weekends as a college student, so I'm not super in tune with his normal behavior, but I...
Hey everyone. I have a ~1 year old barred rock rooster who I just noticed this evening has an incredibly red butt area that extends down his abdomen. It's redder than a strawberry. I'm not too sure if this is a breed thing since he is my only barred rock, so maybe this is kind of a noobie...
Update 3:
She seems to be improving! I let her out of her cage today to clean it out, and she was actually using her leg to walk instead of just walking on her hock. She's only barely able to use it and has a very dramatic limp, but she's putting some weight on it and she's gaining better...
Oooooh, thank you! I was wondering if I was doing something wrong lol. It's been awhile since I've been active here... I haven't had any issues until 2 days ago 🙃
@TudyBOT
Do you think it would be a good idea to but a splint or cast on her, or is that a bad idea considering I'm not actually sure what's wrong with her?
Update 2:
I'm making these updates in the hopes that maybe someone may see these and give suggestions. I don't really know what I should be doing 😞 I've never not gotten a response, so maybe this has stumped everyone...
I checked her for an impacted crop and she's in the clear as far as that...

Today I found one of my hens unable to use her leg. Her name is Ebbie, and she is a 7 year old buff orpington. When I let the chickens out to free range I found her sitting in the run unable to walk, or at least not very well. I brought her in and looked her over; no wounds, no...
Update:
I took her bandage off this morning. I moved her leg below the hock and it was very easy to move compared to the other normal leg, as if it was just kind of hanging there. I tried to feel for a dislocation or for a slipped tendon, but I couldn't feel anything. There's still no swelling...

I haven't actually gotten any pictures. I'm not too worried about it, I just wanted to see what Tudy would say lol. I figured she was too old, so I'm just planning on keeping an eye on her
@TudyBOT
I have a 3.5 week old barred rock chick, and I just realized her inner toe on both feet are bent towards eachother. It doesn't seem to be causing her any problems, but should I try to correct this? Is she too old to correct it? Will this cause her future problems if left alone?
We started out at 95 and plan to reduce the temp every week, so this weekend when I come home I'll reduce it to 85. The room that this is in is actually quite cool, so the other side of the box is room temperature. I know I'm a little behind on reducing because I got them in the middle of the...
I was worried it might be cockerel behavior, but I didn't know if behavior like that would start so early. Hopefully it's just the breeds, but I guess we'll find out...
Hey everyone. I've gotten chicks again for the second time after 6 years. I've gotten 3 barred rocks and 1 Ameraucana. I got them a week and a half ago on March 8th, and they were only like a day old then so they're about a week and a half old now. I'm a college student and am only home on the...
