Leghorn California White White Leghorn And California Gray Mixed

Leghorn
California White (White Leghorn and California Gray mixed) Created by matthewschickens

Breed Information, Comments, and Experience with breed:

This is by far my favorite breed of my 13+ breeds that I own. They lay TONS of LARGE white eggs, are VERY friendly and I think they are beautiful. They are not a meat bird because there is no meat on them. They have always laid in our nesting boxes unlike some of our other breeds that lay elsewhere. They are not skittish like leghorns are. They are white, which means that if you have a lot of predators and let your chickens free range then you might lose more than if they were barred like a BR. I hope this helps you make your breed selection! If you have any Q. at all on this breed then feel free to PM me at matthewschickens on BYC. I will try to post more pics of our other hens as time goes on! Matthew

***The California White Chicken is primarily an egg laying breed. They are a cross between a White Leghorn hen and a CaliforniaGrey Rooster (aka Production Black). Carousel Acers

Does any member know where I can buy California Gray breeder cockerels from. I'm interested in starting my own chicken hatchery. Thanks

I have looked on the internet and no matter where I looked they don't have them or are sold out for this year already. I was looking to get some also. If you find any let me know and I'll do the same.
I love my white leghorns. I have 2 white and 2 brown leghorns. The whites are much friendlier than the browns and do lay larger eggs. I intend to get 2 more this spring during chick days.
They dont look like any ca. leghorns ive seen advertized. They just look like white leghorns.
Im not saying theres anything wrong with that though.
To kapie9969 - Basically this hybrid is a slightly larger sized bird from a regular White Leghorn but the temperament of the skittish White Leghorn is diffused with a calmer temperament in the California White hybrid. I love White Legs as ours was a gentle alpha leader. However the only way to get a calmer Leg is to get it hybrid w/ some other breed.

We have a Buff Leghorn breed that is much calmer in temperament than our White Leg was. Because other Buff breeds were used to create the Buff Leghorn variety our Buff Leg is calmer, less skittish, than the White variety. The one drawback is that we got the Buff before the white eggs were perfected so she still lays pink tan M-LG eggs rather than the XL snow white eggs of her White Leg cousin but she is just as prolific and has a slightly smaller single comb that we like better than the huge floppy fleshy comb of the Whites or Brown Legs.
