It's been almost a year since we anxiously awaited the arrival of our 5 little chicks. We were so nervous and excited at the same time and hoped that they all would make the trip safe and sound. All 5 arrived safely and have now grown into quite the lovely ladies. It has been more fun and rewarding than we ever imagined. We handled them a lot since they were babies and now they all are extremely friendly and enjoy being held. When we call "laaaaaadies", they will all come running like mini dinosaurs. I'd like to introduce our 5 ladies, who are otherwise known as "The Hennies" and share some photos from the past 10 months together.
Above: Annie/Buff Orpington - Annie is the queen of the flock. Since she was a little chick, she'd jump on our hands and arms at any chance, so to this day, Annie still loves to be held and will peck at us if we are holding someone else. She is the smallest and lightest and has been since she was a baby. I used to worry about her being small, since I always read about how Buff Orpingtons are a larger bird, but she seems healthy and normal otherwise. She is also the fastest runner. I just tell her she's small, but mighty.
Above: Hops/Easter Egger - Hops is second commander in charge. She always seems to be on guard and has one eye to the sky. She's a little more aloof, but extremely friendly and does enjoy being held. She's a really sweet bird and is always nice to the other girls. We tell her that we think she's really a falcon. She lays mint green eggs.
Above: Henny Penny/Rhode Island Red - Henny Penny is next in line. She was the first to lay at 20 weeks and has been our most reliable layer. Henny Penny has an adventurous spirit and is definitely the most curious out of all the girls. She is always the first to investigate. When she was a baby, she'd also jump on our arms at any opportunity. She also jumped on my head and when she was a little older, she jumped on our dog's back. She will let us hold her, but usually not for long. She gets antsy. I guess there is too much exploring to be done.
Above: Nana/Australorp - Nana is a beautiful girl with big, brown eyes. We started calling her "Goose" because she sounds like a goose! Nana is second from the bottom. It wasn't always that way. She had lost a battle to Henny Penny and ever since then, Henny Penny doesn't let her forget. In return, Nana tends to pick on Rosa at times.
Above: Rosa/Barred Plymouth Rock - Rosa is super sweet and mellow with her pretty yellow eyes. She is the bottom of the pecking order. She enjoys being held and tends to chum around with Henny Penny a lot. Probably because Henny Penny will protect her from Nana.

Above: Annie laying an egg in the wheelbarrow. Before winter hit, we loaded the straw into the wheelbarrow and stored it under our patio to keep it dry. Well, it didn't take long before it was discovered and it soon became the hip and happening place to lay eggs when not in their coop/run.
