So Cal high desert near Mojave
I am making some perches out of old weathered 2x4 and was wondering if there was some chemical I can spray on to prevent the possibility of mites taking hold. The wood is old and full of small cracks, and is going into a new 'plastic' coop I am assembling. I am tossing the small, puny, perches that came with the coop.

Thanks

Well, at Tractor Supply, Manna Pro sells a product called Poultry Protector. It's a spray that deters mites/lice, and it's not a harsh chemical. It can be used preventatively in coops or directly on birds if mites/lice are spotted. My chicks are young so I don't have much personal experience with it, but I plan to spray my roosts with it every month after cleaning...can't hurt! Bloggers such as Tilly's Nest swear by it.
