Sexing Easter Eggers...

Can anyone show some photos or give help on sexing easter eggers. I know they are a mutt and follow no specific guidelines but at apx 4-5 weeks old is it possible to tell the difference?


Also a question on sex linked (black stars) from what I read on how black stars are 'created' a pullet will have a black head whereas a roo will have a white spot on the back of the head.... okay so what happens if every black star you have seen has featherless legs and you see one with feathered legs but are told its a black star. inquire some more and find out that the roo used was a cochin (I think that's the spelling). Don't know the hen. Will using a cochin roo still produce a sex link (again I don't know what the hen was but not a cochin).

Red/gold roo over barred hen will produce a sexlink. I'd say you could get a sexlink with a Cochin,though it may not be sexable right at hatch. I have three Cochin/Silkie x Barred Rock girls. They are solid black and their brother was barred. Same with EE roo over BR hen and Silver Phoenix over BR hen. Barred Males.

Pea combed birds can be sexed by the comb most of the time. The males will have raised, broad combs with all three rows of "peas" showing. The center ridge on the pullets is the only one visible for ages and the comb stays yellow for a very long time.

I'm pretty sure these are pullets?

2 pics of Nugget. She was expected to be white but she is getting a brown neck/head. She should be interesting to see how she develops. She has turned out to be one that loves to lay in my hand and get neck and head rubs. She is turning out to be a little doll.

I just made a discovery tonight. I think I have a ROO!!!

Up until this morning, I thought all of my ten 6 wk olds sold to me as pullets were indeed pullets. That was until my smaller EE made a funny squacking sound when I took the top off the stock tank and they all flew up to greet me.

I was thinking, that was funny because she is a she. The comb is still flat and yellow - not even raised and pinkish/redish like some of the other chicks. The wing feather's all growing in evenly just like all the others.

Well, tonight I looked at 'her' again and my goodness, her comb is the flat row of peas like in the pic of the roo above. All of my other's have the single row standing up right in various stages of turning from yellow to pink/red.

I'll attempt to attach a pic I took of the two EE's last Sunday.

Do I have a roo?

The one on the left could be a boy, but they are not always as clearly one or the other as in my photos above. I've had some cockerels who were a big vague for longer than normal, with sort of in-between combs.

Guess I'll wait longer but I"m afraid if StirFry starts crowing it will be just that.....StirFry! I'm not even suppose to have them right now. I did get these little ones from a local individual who already said if one turned out to be a roo to give a call back. My concern is getting a pullet the same age. I really want 3 but I may end up with just 2.

I love how BBQ (the black one) is developing but really hope she is truly a she. One disappoint of possibly loosing my 'chipmunk'.... boy does one get attached to these guys watching them grow up (I'm a sucker for birds of all kinds.... I have raised and now mainly focus on taking in parrots that need forever homes). I don't think I could eat any of them ... I can eat chicken... just wouldn't be able to eat one of my own wee ones.

StirFry does seem to make a deeper cluck over a peep like the other 2... that was something else that said things were 'off'. I don't know if that makes a difference or not (young vocalizing). Stirfry also likes to run over and kick the others after I've had them out a bit and put them back in. I thought it was a dominance thing starting between the 'girls' but would a roo do that to pullets?
