Does anyone use one of these? I thought that it might be a good step towards going green.

Any idea how hard it is to assemble, or where to get the materials/plans?
 
55 gallon plastic barrel you can probably find on craigs list, put on a hose spout like the one you connect the hose to your house type thing and set it under where your gutters empty out the water. I am sure someone here can go into more detail but that is the just of it.
 
Thanks, I checked Craigslist, and they have some already made up (from food grade barrels) for $35, including spigot and filter, or, you can buy just the barrel for $10.

Anyone have more information on the set-up?

Would anything from the roof (like chemicals from the shingles) be dangerous to plants?

Could I use this water for the chickens?
 
I've seen somebody use a plastic trash can with a lid. They cut a hole in the lid so that the water spout from the gutters will fit down into it.
 
I've got 3 attached to my house, sorry no pictures and they were a worthwhile investment. Although last summer we went only 9 days at the most without rain I didnt use much of the water. But the year before I used a lot of water, and was down to half a barrel at one point. I bought mine on sale from Orschelins, originally olive barrels from Greece, they came with a spicket at the bottom, I only had to paint them and put a runoff line in the top, it was pretty easy. They fill up fast with a good rain. If you want I can send some links. chris......
 
Here are some links I used for mine, I bought my barrels locally and saved quite a bit, around $30 a barrel and they came w/a spicket. AN overflow is at the top/side of the barrel and is a plastic tube or pipe to divert water through when the barrel is full. Some use a small hose, some use a bigger hose which I am going to change mine to as this will allow leaves to go out of the barrel whe it gets full. check ur local craigslist for plastic barrels (food grade) some can be bought for $10-$15. Thanks for the links, does $20 for the empty barrel seem like a reasonable price?
 
If it is food grade or, you know what it was used for previously, is approx 50 gal I would pay $20 for it, sure. chris.....
