My Coop
My Coop
Along with my new feeder I decided to clean out my chicken run.

I've got chain link fence under my chicken run (yes, I was paranoid when I built my run) and It looked like there were a few inches of dirt that had collected. Well, when I took a rake to it I found that there were about 4 inches of very light weight dark compost looking material. I know this isn't the usual rock hard heavy clay soil I'm use to seeing around my property, so this left me to guess that it is probably an accumulation of the past few years of chicken poop with a bit of dirt from around the run and shavings from the coop.

Well, I'm guessing this stuff is going to be magical in my garden. I used a bunch of similar stuff for my lawn top dressing but I think the stuff from my compost was much less concentrated than this stuff is. I'm wondering if there is too much nitrogen in this stuff to use as top dressing for the lawn.

I've got about 6 buckets full and I'm not sure if I should use it as is, or mix it with my compost to thin it out. What do you think?

I wouldn't worry about it unless it looks like it loaded with fresh poo. A lot of the nitrogen is used in the decomposition process and I'm sure some leached into the ground.
