Hi! If anyone has a good idea about the sex of my two 8 1/2 week old black australorps, I'd love to hear it.

One of them is a little bigger than the other, with a larger comb and wattle. I'd think that means it is a roo, except it's been ahead of the second one all along in it's development, and I'm beginning to think the second one is just a late bloomer. So far their feathers have been coming in the same, and everything else seems to be the same between the two of them.
I know the pictures aren't the best - they just won't stay still long enough to get a good picture! I'll try to take more soon. Thanks!

They are definately boys. Can I suggest Names?

Buy a hen for each of them and name them:

Cosmo and Cookie
and Cocky and Cluck

I'm not SO sure they are roosters, they look very much like my BA's at that age, which are all hens. And by the way, mine- from McMurray - have matured at very different rates. A couple (of my 4) were several weeks ahead of the others in developing red combs and wattles, and one of them still hasn't, at 18 weeks. I've read other posts on this site remarking that their BA also developed at varied rates. The other poster may be looking at those upright tails... you are just going to have to be patient!

Oh no! Not 2 roosters! I can't have roosters in the city, and I was really hoping that at least one of them is a pullet. I guess only time will tell.....

My cousin's grandmother once raised chickens, and said that when the chicks' feathers grow out enough, like at 5 weeks for my chicks, then the ones with slightly shiny feathers are males, and the females have dull, not so shiny ones. She couldn't tell the gender of the silkies, though, since they are soo fluffy. I'm not sure if that's true, but it does make sense!
