I have a friend who lives in a rural area with a few neighbors close by. On his street everyone has roughly 2.5 acres. He is the only one with chickens. He currently has 30 laying hens and gets about 2 dozen eggs a day. Well a few weeks ago his egg count went down to roughly 5 a day. We were talking and trying to figure out what the problem could be. No one was molting, they are happy and healthy hens who are just approaching a year old. We couldn't figure it out. But what was weird to us was on Saturdays and Sundays he was getting 2 doz a day, it was just Mon-Fri he was having the low egg count. Well my friend leaves for work at 8:30 am and returns home around 5:30 pm. He decided to set up a camera at his kitchen window. You can see the whole coop and run from there. Well that day he returned home from work and watched the video. At about 4:45 pm a neighbor from a few houses down came into my friends yard with a basket, unlatched the nesting boxes and took the eggs!
My friend called the cops and has filed charges against the other guy. Come to find out this other guy was selling the eggs at his work
The nerve of some people.
This is why every door and window on my coop is not only predator proof but human proof also. I have padlocks on everything. Yes sometimes it's a pain to have to carry keys out to the coop but I would hate to have to deal with what my friend has!
