Morning all
Finally finished our run this weekend and got our chickens.
I bought the house on a whim back last october from a demolition sale. It only cost £10 but was in a pretty bad shape. I replaced the the roof, repaired doors, added legs and better perches etc etc. i also gave the inside a thick coat of garage floor paint that i had laying around to help make cleaning easier. Ventilation is under the roof eaves and it measures 8ft by 3ft by 6ft.
Its then taken months until i've had the time and money to finish the run. I wanted something fully covered and big enough to stand up in. It also had to be quite sturdy as we have foxes and badgers in our garden most nights. The design i came up with was the biggest i could make out of one roll 30m roll of welded aviary mesh. I got the majority of the wood from the local recycling store which saved some money. I bought the railway sleepers for £5 each at the same sale as the coop. Here it is:
I've already beefed the door up, the feeders are suspended by chain and dug mesh into the ground under the sleepers. It measures 8ft X 12ft by 6ft high. I'm happy with the results, a few tweaks to make still but its serving its purpose well so far.
We got our chickens from middle farm near Lewes on Sunday. We got a Calder Ranger, Light Sussex, Rhode Rock, White Ranger and a Speckledy. Here are some pics and my 2 year old daughter Paige enjoying them already:
I've got plenty still to learn about chickens but just wanted to say thanks to the BYC forum for all the information i've got from it so far.
Please let me know what you think....thanks
